Set up, open, and lock your Lockbox
Open your Lockbox
Use any of these:
- In Chat, type "open my Lockbox" or "I want to access my Lockbox."
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Data → Lockbox and choose Open.
- Press and hold the name Kipton at the top of the sidebar for a second.
The first time, Kipton asks you to create a Lockbox password. Then it offers a recovery key as a backup way in. Download it and keep it somewhere safe and private. If you skip it and forget your password, no one can open your Lockbox.
You can also add a password hint. The hint isn't encrypted, so never put your password in it.
Add to your Lockbox
- In Chat, type "Save [what you want to keep] to my Lockbox" or "Lockbox this: [what you want to keep]".
- You can also move an existing memory into your Lockbox.
- After you've opened your Lockbox once on a device, you can add items from that device even while your Lockbox is locked.
- While your Lockbox is open, choose Items in Settings → Privacy & Data → Lockbox to see your items, move text items back out, or delete them.
Lock it
Type "lock my Lockbox," or close or reload Kipton. It also locks after about 5 minutes without a tap or key press. On phones, time with the screen off may not count toward those 5 minutes, so lock it yourself when you're done.
Keep it private
- To make your Lockbox less obvious, choose Hide next to it in Settings. You can still open it from Chat or by holding the Kipton name.
- If you type your Lockbox password into the chat box, Kipton warns you to use the secure password box instead.
- After 5 wrong password tries, you'll need to wait before trying again.
